Carly, So Far, is a retrospective glimpse of Francie Bishop Good’s on-going photographic project documenting the development of her niece since age seven. This exhibition features a sampling of works from numerous series depicting Carly drawn from more than one hundred photographs. Extending from childhood through adolescence, these images are a prolonged meditation on the relationship of a young girl to a rapidly evolving contemporary society.

A number of the works in Carly, So Far are voyeuristic in nature and may place the viewer in an uncomfortable situation. In the Carly, TV Series, the young girl is captured in playful poses wearing wigs, while images from art history are displayed on the television. The images appear innocent enough, yet some might find the slightly provocative poses challenging. With an impassive stare, she peers at the viewer, as if confronting them. There is a sexual subtext in Bishop Good’s photographs, particularly in the recent works. Carly as an adolescent is much more aware of her own sexuality. This is evident in many of these works when she is gazed at by older men and teenaged boys as she makes her way through various environments. Above all, these works attest to the hurried maturity of girls in a society in which sexuality is openly displayed in advertising, the Internet and media.
