Adult Programs

MOCA Jacksonville’s Education Department, serves adults in our community offering opportunities for understanding and appreciating modern and contemporary art with particular emphasis on works created from 1960 to the present. Utilizing the collections and exhibition resources of the Museum, education programming and events are designed to align with exhibitions in our galleries.


Studio MOCA Classes

The Museum of Contemporary Art Jacksonville presents Studio MOCA classes for adults and teens ages 15 and up. Please see the individual class descriptions for meeting dates, times and locations. Register early to insure your spot; classes with poor registration are subject to cancellation. Full payment is required with registration. Paul Ladnier

Distilling the Figure

Feb. 13th and 20th / 2 Saturdays / 12-4 pm

This workshop is designed to help participants develop a natural way of drawing the unclothed human figure. Emphasis will be upon accurate and naturalistic interpretations using a variety of drawing techniques. Working with live models, participants will engage in exercises exploring form, shape, contour, value, line, mass and anatomy. Paul Ladnier, Associate Professor of Painting and Drawing at UNF, has been teaching figure drawing and painting, plein-air and abstract painting for more than 30 years.

Alex Diaz

Basic Digital Imaging

Feb. 27th and March 6th / 2 Saturdays / 12-4 pm

This course is designed to introduce workshop participants to Adobe Photoshop CS4 and inkjet printing. Students will learn how to import, organize, edit, and properly print their digital images. Alexander Diaz is a Visiting Instructor at UNF who has been utilizing Photoshop for the past eight years.

Nofa Dixon

Good Design/Good Composition Through Collage

Feb. 27th and March 6th / 2 Saturdays / 12-4 pm

This workshop will teach students the elements of strong design and composition through the collage making process. Using a variety of materials such as photographs, printed images, textures, stamps, etc., students will learn how to balance and organize their compositions as well as engage in critiques of their work. Nofa Dixon, Assistant Professor of Drawing, Painting and Design at UNF, works primarily in hand-constructed clay forms that undergo multiple glazes and are then finished with mixed media surface treatments.

Paul Karabinis

Cyanotype Printing with Digital Negatives

April 10th and 17th / 2 Saturdays / 12-4 pm

Working with film or digital images, participants will learn how to make enlarged digital negatives for printing with cyanotype, and historical photographic process. Basic knowledge of image adjustment with Photoshop or Photoshop elements is preferred. Paul Karabinis is Assistant Professor of Photography at UNF and has worked with historical photographic processes for over twenty-five years. (http://paulkarabinis.com)

Raymond Gaddy

Basic Bookbinding

April 10th and 17th / 2 Saturdays / 12-4 pm

Workshop participants will learn the ancient sewing technique of Coptic binding. This binding style offers wonderful options for the possibilities of making several styles of books. Each student will produce a Coptic-bound book and learn the fundamentals of many bookbinding techniques as well as some basic pop-up book techniques. Raymond Gaddy is an Instructor of Painting and Drawing at UNF and has explored the history of medieval bookbinding techniques and processes. (http://www.raymondgaddy.com)

Stephanie Shieldhouse

Life Drawing

April 24th and May 1st / 2 Saturdays / 12-4 pm

Working from direct observation of a live model, workshop participants will complete exercises based on long-established methods of instruction in figure drawing. A sequence of quick gesture drawings in charcoal will be followed by studies of longer duration. Proportion, balance, foreshortening and negative space will be explored with a focus on each student’s potential for response and self-expression. All levels welcome. Stephanie Shieldhouse is Adjunct Instructor of Art at UNF.

Docent Training Program

As volunteer educators at the Museum, docents (museum guides) are literally the face and voice of MOCA Jacksonville. Docents strive to meet the Museum’s mission, making the art in our galleries accessible and enjoyable to diverse audiences while promoting a life-long appreciation of the visual arts.

Docents are required to complete an intensive eight-week training that will cover the logistics of giving tours to school and adult groups, the details of MOCA’s permanent collection, and critical issues in contemporary art. Trained docents are then encouraged to fulfill three touring shifts per month.
