Teacher Programs
MOCA Jacksonville is an educational institution that promotes art enrichment by providing resources for area teachers and educators. The Museum invites teachers and students to learn more about contemporary art by touring our permanent and visiting exhibitions. We also provide teachers with special curricula to help infuse art into their classroom. MOCA Jacksonville celebrates teachers and educators by providing special programming, educator memberships, art educator exhibitions, and excellence in teaching awards.
2009 First Coast Portfolio: A Juried Art Educators Exhibition
Each year MOCA invites art educators practicing in Baker, Clay, Duval, Nassau and St. Johns counties to submit work for consideration in the annual First Coast Portfolio Juried Exhibition. This year’s exhibition of juried works was on display in the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida Education Gallery November 22, 2008 – February 1, 2009.
First Coast Portfolio is an annual exhibition designed to showcase the latest works by art educators currently employed and teaching in public and independent schools (including charter, alternative, private and parochial settings) in the First Coast counties. Teachers share their creative talents with the next generation; as artists MOCA encourages those teachers to share their artistic talents with our community. This year’s juror is James T. Janson, Ph. D. Janson developed the museum studies program at the Savannah College of Art and Design and served as chair of the art history department from 2000-02.
Submissions
To submit work to be considered for this year’s First Coast Portfolio Juried Exhibition, download, print and complete an entry form and follow the attached instructions. Memphis Wood Excellence in Teaching Award
Known as Jacksonville’s “First Lady of Art,” Memphis Wood made an astonishing contribution to art and art education in Jacksonville that is still felt today. As a one-woman force in building an appreciation for the arts, Memphis taught and influenced may of Jacksonville’s most successful artists.
In her honor, MOCA Jacksonville offers the annual Memphis Wood Excellence in Teaching Award for outstanding contributions to arts in education. The award honors a First Coast educator with a $1000 honorarium, a guided tour of the museum for 30 students, and a decorative glass award.
This year’s award was presented in March to Moisés Ramos, Art Teacher at Arlington Heights Elementary School in Duval County.

Educator’s Enrichment
The Education Department offers teachers several “tour options”/education/tours for students of all ages and abilities. In addition, MOCA educators provide teachers with special curricula designed to integrate visual art into any subject.
The Education Department also maintains ongoing partnerships with Duval County public schools, reflecting the Museum’s mission to serve as an educational resource for the local community.
