The Art Museum in the 21st Century
April 11 – 2-3pm

One of the primary roots of the public art museum lies in the great private collections of wealthy ruling families such as the Medicis and the Hapsburgs. These grand accumulations of art, precious objects, and unusual natural artifacts were first made available to a broad public in the eighteenth century in a spirit of beneficent egalitarianism. Over time, institutions, such as the Uffizi, shifted their collecting and exhibition philosophies. No longer seeking to provide encyclopedic displays of art and artifacts, they became cultural repositories, more or less exclusively dedicated to the visual arts. These institutions had multiple functions, which included safeguarding cultural treasures and serving the intellectual and aesthetic needs of both popular and scholarly audiences. Today, the role of the public art museum has expanded even further into the worlds of education and popular entertainment. This lecture investigates the many faces of the modern museum by considering its constituencies, functions, and obligations as both a social and a cultural institution.
