PANEL: Pop Art, Comic Books and the High Art of Roy Lichtenstein

Thursday, March 1 • 7 p.m.

Throughout the 1950s, comic books were deemed a corrupting influence on the youth of America, but by the late 1960s , they had been elevated to “high art.” Join moderator Al Letson, a self-proclaimed “comic book nerd,” as MOCA Director Marcelle Polednik; sequential artist and UNF professor James Green; artist and innovator of Postmodern Cartoon Expressionism David ‘LEBO’ Le Batard and other guests discuss the historical origins and impact of telling stories through sequential pictures. Special emphasis will be paid to the works of Roy Lichtenstein, a leading Pop artist whose large-scale paintings and prints were inspired by the panel forms of comic strips.
